With so many webinars and virtual events taking place across the globe, we sometimes forget how much we can actually gain from good old fashioned, face-to-face interaction at content marketing events.
Face-to-face interaction is key to creating strong, lasting relationships. We’ve all sent countless emails back and forth, and conversed via tools like Slack and Trello, but how much more valuable are relationships, when we occasionally meet too?
Same applies to networking. You can network on social channels and also via email, but networking face-to-face, at an event, really has its advantages.
However, we can’t attend every content marketing event out there. And, we also need to be strategic in how we use our time before, during and after the ones we do choose to make our way to. Take a look at our top tips for making the most out of content marketing events.
Before the event
Some content marketing events have just one track (where there is only one speaker on stage at a time), whereas others offer several tracks, so multiple speakers can be on stage at any one given time. It’s a good idea to take a good look at the event’s speaker lineup well in advance, doing a little research on each, to ensure you don’t miss any of your favourites. A lot of content marketing events have an app, which makes it much easier to keep track of what’s on where.
You can also use your research to create a great blog post about the speakers you’re most excited to see at the content marketing event, and why. Plus, you can make sure to follow all your favourites on social channels, like Twitter and LinkedIn. You could tweet them in advance, asking something about their scheduled talk, or even think of some questions you might like to ask them via social on the day and save them to your drafts.
At the event
It’s important to use your time at the event wisely. You’ll want to catch as many interesting talks as possible, but you also need to remember to take some time to network. It’s a good idea to get into the routine of introducing yourself to everyone you meet. Whether you’re sitting next to them, grabbing a coffee at the same time, or standing next to one another in line for lunch, there’s no harm in saying hello – you never know who you might meet.
If there’s someone in particular that you’d like to talk too, don’t be afraid to approach them. Most speakers are happy to chat after their talks, so be brave and go for it!
It’s also great to engage in conversation on social with others at the conference. They may be interested in something you mentioned and might like to chat some more.
Always follow up with connections made at the content marketing event afterwards. Drop them an email, or even a message on social to say that it was great to meet them. You can schedule a meeting or simply arrange to meet up and chat over coffee.
